National Certificate (NC2) Review in Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy and Ankle Sprain

A gentle massage can be used to ease the pain and swelling caused by both sprains and strains. A sprain is caused by the abnormal wrenching and twisting of a joint. A strain is a torn or stretched muscle.

At the first opportunity, place a cold compress, such as an ice pack or a packet of frozen peas (wrapped in a towel or piece of clothing), on the injured area to reduce inflammation.

The ankle is the most commonly sprained part of the body. If the ankle is very swollen and painful, consult a doctor before massaging to rule out the possibility of a dislocation or fracture. A gentle massage can help reduce swelling and relieve pain. Massage for at least 10 minutes, and repeat several times a day. Continue this treatment for about a week or until the injury is healed.

Headache, Migraine and Massage Therapy

Deep-tissue massage therapy: People avail massages to get rid of pain and discomfort or just to give themselves a relaxing treat. A massage therapist uses pressure, movement, and stretching to render your body more pliable and comfortable. Speaking of headaches, a massage therapist will usually use therapeutic, deep-tissue techniques. Deep-tissue massages may serve to improve circulation (blood and lymphatic) and help lower muscle tension. When performing a deep-tissue massage, a massage therapist focuses on specific areas of the body to relieve pain and release stress. Many believe that massage can reduce muscle pain and ease muscle tension and stiffness. Deep tissue refers to the use of deep finger pressure and slow strokes on areas of the body that are suffering from muscle tension or aches.

As many deep-tissue massage works well on tense shoulders and necks, it can sometimes provide relief from the symptoms of headache. (If you aren't sure whether your physical condition is amenable to the massage, always check first with your doctor before having a massage. Massage isn't recommended if you have varicose veins, a recent fracture, sprain, or nerve injury, or if you've recently had chemotherapy or radiation.)
