Philippine Training for Nail Spa, Manicure and Pedicure

Native Incas decorated their toenails and fingernails with pictures of eagles, but it is unclear how the practice of coloring nails progressed following these beginnings. Portraits from the 17th and 18th centuries include shiny nails.

At the turn of the 19th century, nails were tinted with scented red oils, and polished or buffed with a chamois cloth, rather than simply polished."History of Nail Care." Originally published in Nails magazine, 2007. English and US 19th century cookbooks had directions for making nail paints. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, people pursued a polished rather than painted look by massaging tinted powders and creams into their nails, then buffing them shiny. One such polishing product sold around this time was Graf's Hyglo nail polish paste. Some people during this period painted their nails with clear, glossy varnish applied with a camel-hair brush. When automobile paint was created around 1920, it inspired the introduction of colored nail glosses.

Tips on Spa Ethics for Massage Therapists and Nail Spa Employees

Helpful tips to live by:
  1. Remember the golden rule: Treat people how you want them to treat you. This goes for relationships with clients, co-workers and bosses.
  2. Define your personal standards and stick with them: Discover your personal integrity and what lines you won’t cross. If what you’re doing doesn’t feel good in your gut, then don’t do it, even if everyone else is. This may include having a discussion with the spa owner/manager about your boundaries.
  3. Talk with your fellow employees: Have a conversation, not a lecture. Ask questions about policies you don’t understand or modalities you weren’t taught. Be friendly with everyone.
  4. Don’t be afraid to talk with the boss: This could be about clarifying something or discussing a problem you’ve noted; names of co-workers don’t have to be mentioned. Bosses wear a lot of hats and do a lot of different things at the same time, so make sure your conversations are short and private.
  5. If it doesn’t work, then leave with dignity: No room for temper tantrums; no walking out the door throwing things; no back stabbing. If possible, give your two week notice and leave on the last day, not before. There might even be a farewell party for you.

Client Consultation in Day Spas and Nail Salons

Tips on Effective Client Interview / Consutation:
  1. Make it a habit to Invite the client into your salon by shaking her hand and introducing yourself; address the client by her name if she has visited the salon before. Provide her with a chair that has a backrest and sit across her so you face each other.
  2. Present your client with the necessary paper work, which includes a consultation form to fill and provide her with a pen. Sit with her and assist her whenever necessary.
  3. Go through a client file where you will record all the treatment you give her in the future and any information she gives you.
  4. Ask questions on your client's lifestyle, schedule, personal style and personal preferences. Ask open questions that begin with "how," "what," "why," "where," "which" and "who" to enable you to learn as much as you can from the client.
  5. Listen to your client attentively, maintain eye contact throughout the consultation and clarify the information given if not clear. Note any information that will help you choose a treatment for her.
  6. Perform the necessary treatments and explain to the client what happens at every treatment. Advise her on how to style her hair or take care of her nails and skin while at home. Alternatively, book an appointment where she will come in for the treatment.
  7. Recommend products she will use at home and offer her an appointment where you will assess her progress.

Tips on Nail Care:

Filing Nails:

File finger nails and toe when the white part of the nail tip has grown 1/4" from the pink part of the nail. Filing nails before the nail is 1//4" long can weaken the nail. Allowing the nail to grow to a length longer than the base pink nail length will be sure to make them break easily. Nail filing from side to side would weaken the nails. When filing, go from the corner to the center in one direction. Follow the groove on the side of your nail.

Buffing Nails:
Buffing the nails can give them a shinier finish. Start at the cuticle and work your way down to the tip with medium pressure. Don't use a back and forth movement as heat builds up and this can damage your nails. Continue lightly until all ridges on the nail surface have disappeared.
Clean Nails:
Always be sure that nails are clean and dry, free of any oil or lotion, before applying polish. Remove any old polish from nails.

Base Coat:
Use a Base Coat and let it dry for at least 1 minute. The Base Coat helps to keep nail polish from chipping and makes polish last longer.

Applying Polish:
Then apply two coats of polish. You should be able to cover the nail in three stokes, one on each side and then one in the middle.

Drying Time:
Allow your polish to dry thoroughly for several minutes before you apply the next coat. This will avoid the new coat from dragging on the surface of the previous coat and allow the next layer adhere better. Darker shades take longer to dry. Avoid fast drying polish. It does not last as long.

Top Coat:
After your nail polish has dried, apply a clear Top Coat to seal it. Continue to apply the Top Coat daily to keep nails looking fresher longer.

Finally, remove with a nail polish remover that contains hydrating oils.

What is Nail Art (Nail Architecture)?

Nail art (or nail architecture) is an exciting journey beyond a typical manicure or pedicure with nail polish. Nail art allows the wearer to personalize their nails to harmonize with their clothes, makeup, shoes and accessories. Often times, nail art may include use of elements like crystals, stickers, glitter, graphic designs, multicolored polishes, lace or fabrics. Nail art can be applied to any type of nail, either natural or artificial.

Intricate nail art is quite popular in Japan and Korea, but now the nail art trend has spread worldwide. Many famous Hollywood actresses, fashionable singer, musicians and fashion models in the United States are generous these trendsetting nail designs, and many women want to emulate this look. Although nail polish and nail brushes are available for home manicures, doing intricate nail art on your own fingernails can be quite complicated. Many women go to specialized nail salons to get nail art done.
