With increased blood circulation and improved blood pressure, you will notice a reduction in your heart rate as well as a lower pulse. This reflexive response with massage encourages your entire body to relax!
Massage therapy also impacts the cardiovascular system by reducing the occurrence of ischemia in the body. Ischemia is the reduced blood supply due to constricted or blocked arteries.
The increase in blood circulation, allowing nutrients, hormones and wastes to move accordingly, contributes to the increase in the count of red blood cells, which in turn will allow more oxygen to enter the bloodstream. Studies have found an increase in white blood cell counts and the way white blood cells are able to adhere and function. We'll look at white blood cells and platelets when we study the effects massage has on the lymphatic system.
This is not an all-inclusive list of ways massage can benefit your heart and blood vessels, but this is a great start in gaining a better understanding. As always, you should consult your physician or/and massage therapist if you have any questions about whether or not massage therapy is right for you!
