Fundamental Principles of Massage - DOH (Department of Health Massage License Review)
While there are a wide variety of forms of massage and bodywork, all with their own theoretical or philosophical perspectives, there are certain basic principles they all tend to hold in common.
Release of Muscle Tension.
Chronic muscular tension as a result of high stress lifestyles, trauma, or injury can accumulate and impair the body’s structure and function. Psychological well-being is also affected. Release of tension allows greater relaxation, which has important physiological and psychological benefits.
Structure and Function Are Interdependent.
The musculoskeletal structure of the body affects function and function affects structure. Both can be adversely altered by stress or trauma. Massage therapy and bodywork can help restore healthy structure and function, thereby allowing better circulation, greater ease of movement, wider range of movement, more flexibility, and the release of chronic patterns of tension.
Enhancement of All Systems of the Body.
All bodily systems are affected by better circulation and more harmonious functioning of the soft tissue and musculature. Internal organ systems as well as the nervous system, the immune system, and other systems can benefit. There can be an overall improvement in the quality of life and physical health.

A Code of Ethics is a statement which expresses the primary ethical values, obligations and goals of the profession. It is a commitment which serves to bear witness to our promise as a profession to uphold the values and ethical obligations expressed in the Code.

A Code of Ethics gives definition to our commitment to practice in ethical terms. As regulated health professionals, we have made a promise to society to accept the responsibility and maintain the trust with which we have been invested.

Basic anatomy introduces the students to the definitions, terminology and basic theme of anatomy. Without knowing the very basic concepts, it is very difficult to understand the complex structural details of human body and that is why, basic anatomy must be learned completely before learning human anatomy. In the gross anatomy, you will study the general and special features of Humerus (arm bone) however, you first need to know what is a bone and what are its characteristics. This part of anatomical study is covered in Basic Anatomy and from this illustration, you can easily imagine the importance of it.

Some massage therapists have very little time scheduled between clients and may find it difficulty to meet safe standards in hand washing. The general rule of thumb is at least 30 seconds, if not a full minute, of brisk hand washing with antibacterial or antimicrobial soap and warm water. Alcohol based hand sanitizers are appropriate for use at the end of a session followed by hand washing with soap and water as soon as possible.
Cleaning the Massage Room
A leather or vinyl massage table can be wiped down with disinfectant spray or wipes. There are quite a few plant-based cleaners that meet anti-bacterial guidelines and are labeled as hospital grade.
Massage Tools and Accessories

When you choose to be a professional massage therapist, you choose a career where you will be in very close proximity with others. Keeping that in mind, it's vital tht you consider your own personal hygiene, so that you don't offend your clients.
Quit Smoking
One of the very first things that comes to mind is smoking. If you're a smoker, you may not realize that the smell of smoke lingers on your hair, your uniform, along with your fingers. I distinctly remember getting a massage, and when the therapist was doing a facial massage, I could smell the smoke on her fingers. It took a soothing experience and turned it into an unpleasant one for me. Do you smoke? What are your clients thinking? I'll be honest, I didn't return to that therapist after that session. If you're a smoker, it's important that you don't smoke between clients. Many people find the smell of smoke that lingers on you offensive. Someone is paying for your time, and you don't want that tiny little factor to be the reason your clients don't return.
Keeping a Fresh Breath
Another personal hygiene issue you'll want to think about is your body odor and your breath. Because you'll be so close to others, this again can be the difference between a one time client and a return client. Most clients will not tell you they found you offensive, but I can guarantee they will find a new massage therapist. Brush your teeth and floss often. Daily showers and deodorant help keep body odor at bay.

Department of Health License Exam Review in Massage Therapy
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH LICENSE EXAM IN MASSAGE THERAPY
Qualification of Applicants
- Physiology (General and Organ System Physiology)
Application and Examination Fee
Scope of Examination
The examination shall be conducted in two (2) parts: theoretical and oral/practical. The theoretical examination shall be conducted in writing and shall comprise basic questions based on the prescribed curriculum. The oral/practical examination shall consist of three (3) phases: (1) Pre-Massage Phase (2) Massage Proper and (3) Post Massage Phase.
Passing Average
Qualification of Applicants
- He/she must be a Filipino citizen, at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of the examination;
- He/she must be of good moral character certified by the Barangay Captain of the community where the applicant resides;
- He/she must submit a certification or clearance from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) or provincial fiscal indicating that he/she is not convicted by the court of any case involving moral turpitude;
- He/she must submit a medical certificate from any government physician the he/she is physically and mentally fit to take the licensure examination;
- He/she must be at least a high school graduate;
- He/she must submit a certificate of training from any Department of Health accredited training provider the he/she has taken practical massage for at least sixty (60) hours;
- He/she must submit a certificate of training from any Department of Health accredited training institution the he/she had received basic instructions on the following:
- Physiology (General and Organ System Physiology)
- General Pathology and Microbiology)
- Massage Therapy I (Introduction to Massage Therapy)
- Massage Therapy II (Massage Therapy Application)
- Massage Therapy III (Practice of Massage Therapy)
Application and Examination Fee
- Applicants must submit to the committee secretariat the prescribed application form duly accomplished and notarized and accompanied by three (3) copies of passport-sized photograph taken within the last six (6) months;
- Applicants shall pay an examination fee in the amount prescribed by the Department of Health Committee of Examiners for Massage Therapy; and
- The application form and examination fee, including the necessary requirements stated above, shall be filed two (2) weeks before the examination date in order for the applicant to be included in the list of examinees.
Scope of Examination

Passing Average
- Only those who have passed the theoretical examination shall qualify for the oral/practical examination.
- All examinees who have passed the theoretical examination shall take the oral/practical examination within one (1) month after official advice, otherwise, the result of the theoretical examination shall be deemed cancelled. He/she shall pay the fee prescribed the Department of Health.
- For an examinee the pass the examination successfully, he/she must obtain a general average of 75% in the theoretical examination and a general average of 75% in the oral/practical examination.
